Waste management and classification
Waste classification and management is regulated by several National Norms and Standards promulgated under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (Act 59 of 2008) (NEMWA). HCS provides the following services regarding waste classification and management:
- Waste Classification and Assessment (GN R. 634 – 636 of 2013)
- Safety Data Sheets according to SANS 10234
- Application for exclusion of waste from the definition of waste (GN R. 715 of 2018)
- Wastewater/sewage sludge classification and management options
Soil contamination and remediation
Contaminated land assessments and site remediation is regulated under Part 8 of NEMWA and its associated National Norms and Standards. In compliance with these, HCS offers the following services:
- Contaminated Land Assessments (GN R. 331 of 2014)
- Site assessment reports (GN 234 of 2012)
- Remediation and monitoring plans
- Remediation oversight and auditing
- Closure reports for remediated sites
Integrated environmental assessment
- Source-pathway-receptor assessments to determine the link, or the absence of linkage, between the source of contamination and the end receptor to establish appropriate remedial action
- Due diligence site assessments to identify potential environmental risks and liabilities prior to selling or purchasing a property
- Environmental Monitoring plans (soil, surface- and groundwater) to monitor the impact of operations on the environment
- Groundwater risk assessments to evaluate the potential impact of contamination on the groundwater resource
Human Health Risk Assessments
The potential risk contamination/pollution poses to human health is a function of the hazard of the contaminant and the exposure of humans to that contaminant. Human health risk models uses mathematical equations to calculate the potential risk to human health based on exposure scenarios.
